The war, then, is a metaphor for the struggle that Sinclair will face in the world as one who attempts to fully express all aspects, both good and evil, of his personality.

Often, these changes cause them to waver between two separate versions of their natures, and make them question their own inherent goodness. Still, I cannot argue with Hesse's pretended muddle of good and evil, or with the notion of Cain in light rather than dark.
Demian then goes even further, planting an alternative perception that individuals have to search within themselves to discover their own fates. The bird is flying to God. Whoever wants to be born must destroy a world.
