Fevre Dream is a 1982 vampire novel written by American author George R. R. Martin. Rival bloodmaster Julian, however, is quite happy to keep his followers going with cannibalism and bloodsucking. Though the book drifts in and out of Anne Rice country, it spends most of its time on the Mississippi River among the culture of steamboat life. If that sounds odd, it should; this is a rather odd book that drifts between historical fiction and horror fiction, with a Twain-like focus on dialect and the Mississippi. Summary Though not a perfect novel, Fevre Dream was an interesting read. Fevre Dream is a story that - yes - involves vampires, but more than anything revolves around a man and his deep love for Steam Boats and the culture of the Mississippi river circa 1857. You can't help but fall for the practical, loyal steamboat Captain Abner and his strange poem loving vampire friend Joshua York. Fevre Dream is certainly a different take on vampires, set against a background so authentic I couldn’t get enough of it. I remember when Fevre Dream came out in hardcover.
