Roberts was born in Arima, Trinidad, the son of a blacksmith, Stephen, and housewife, Albertha. Lord Kitchener was the calypso name of Trinidad native Aldwyn Roberts. Lord Kitchener (born Aldwyn Roberts) shares with Mighty Sparrow the title of the world's best known Calypso singer. Kitchener was also known as the Grandmaster of Calypso and the Road March King. Kitchener's compositions were enormously popular as the chosen selections for steel bands to perform at the annual National Panorama competition during Trinidad Carnival. Aldwyn Roberts (better known by the stage name Lord Kitchener) was one of the most internationally famous calypsonians. Freewheeling and lighthearted, the singer and composer emoted his vitality through a vast repertoire of songs, largely in celebration of life in the Caribbean islands. His father had encouraged him to sing and taught him to play the guitar, and he became a full-time musician, his first job playing guitar for Water Scheme labourers while they laid pipes in the San Fernando Valley. He was educated at the Arima Boys Government School until he was 14, when his father died, leaving him orphaned. In 1948, Kitch emigrated to England in the company of singer Lord Beginner and newsreel footage of the time shows him singing "London Is the Place for Me."
