Louise Nevelson's sculptures seemed rather abstract but in reality they were meant to tackle themes related to Nevelson's complicated past (like emigration, a love affair with Diego Rivera, a divorce) and her fractious present. As an artist whose life coincided with the major historical events and artistic movements of the twentieth century, Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) remained to a remarkable degree true to a singular vision of herself as an artist and her work. Louise Nevelson’s room-sized wood sculptures have been hailed as emblematic of many different movements, including Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism.Monochromatic and usually black, with isolated departures into white and gold, Nevelson assembled the sculptures using discarded pieces of wood that she received or found on the street. Working in a 1950’s art scene dominated by men, she found a way not only to fight the patriarchy but to show them up, inspiring women for decades to come.
