The stage production of Akhnaten … Metropolitan Opera 2019-20 Season: Akhnaten (2019) Director Phelim McDermott tackles another one of Philip Glasss masterpieces, following the now-legendary Met staging of Satyagraha. “Akhnaten,” which had its world premiere back in 1984, continued this trend on Friday night in an immersive if somewhat draining production by Phelim McDermott that, when the dust settles on the 2019-20 season, will likely remain one of its greatest highlights (it is already, without any doubt, the best Met performance of the 2019 calendar year). The orchestral scoring is for large orchestra minus violins (keeping his original opera small to fit in the orchestra pit at premiere gave that idea to Glass) with an interesting array of percussion instruments. The experience of Akhnaten is what we used to call a ‘happening,’ an event where one is drawn into an altered world of sight and sound, color and motion, its effects lingering for…well, forever maybe. The score, like most Glass scores, was inactive.
