I get that it's supposed to be a villain origin story, and supposedly he will be beaten in the next movie, but the cynicism in split really bothered me. [–][deleted] 247 points248 points249 points 4 years ago (2 children). Most of them are honest and healthy people. So I was curious about this too. Just off normal. She never says anything and seems oddly calm. Lots of people are brushing off the Unbreakable tie-in at the end as a simple easter egg, or something tacked last minute onto a totally unrelated film in a cheap attempt to rouse the Unbreakable fan-base. It's also why she froze in the car in the beginning. So many in my theater didn't understand the camio. Having never seen the movie Unbreakable, I still don't quite understand the reference. [–]mi-16evilRobert Zemeckis' Paddington 3[S] 915 points916 points917 points 4 years ago (19 children). The approach is both darkly serious yet oddly peculiar. It was the part when Dennis stops pretending to be Barry at Dr. Fletcher's for me. The film WRAPS with the Unbreakable theme ffs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69K61Ex4TX4. And like I said, I felt like a schmuck for snickering. So while Bruce Willis cannot be broken, it's the fractured state of McAvoy's villain that gives him his power. Yeah, same. If what the article says is "spoilers" I guess the title of the movie is also a spoiler. It was the part when Dennis stops pretending to be Barry at Dr. Fletcher's for me. Like he was made for these specific type of films. I think it's exciting to see M. Night Shyamalan willing to make the most interesting superhero universe to date. For me, that is about as repugnant as can be. I felt it was 7/10, carried by how engaging McAvoy is; I also liked the fact they humanised the character alot, especially Dennis the perverted OCD cleaner, when the psych is talking to him and you genuinely see this identity begin to open up. Fuck that guy. So basically Mr. Glass created both Bruce Willis character and the beast. Seeing Dennis reveal himself in that scene was a high point of the film. It’s all plot, spun into a ribbon of suspense. Loved unbreakable. What a piece of shit. I figured that was why he went to the train and put flowers there. But the other thing? I love so much that The Horde is focused on the 'unbroken' and breaking them. Shyamalan has always been vocal about his wishes to make an Unbreakable Trilogy. As someone who has never seen Unbreakable, it was fun, interesting, and ultimately made my spine tingle. You don't get this stuff even in "more mature" super hero films like Deadpool, Kick-Ass, or Watchmen which are all much more over-the-top. [–]inksmudgedhands 65 points66 points67 points 4 years ago (0 children). It's really good. In Unbreakable our hero's "showdown" doesn't require stylized action, he just chokes out a dude in a gritty, clumsy, and ultimately cathartic long take. Im gonna haveta disagree with you there, i genuinely think The Village is an underrated masterpiece. I don't think this is NEARLY on the same level of Sixth Sense...or Signs...or Unbreakable...but just the idea that the man successfully pulled off a secret sequel is mind-blowing. Crazy good stuff. Pretty late to this particlar conversation, but I just finally got around to watching Split, and I have to say I was pretty frustrated. The fact that a film can be, basically, a completely different film the second time you see it, is masterful. now i'm all excited. Whatever. He even managed to portray a personality (Dennis) impersonating another personality (Barry). Nuts! James macovy really does an amazing sob. [–]wdalphin 62 points63 points64 points 4 years ago (2 children). The editing was so well done, as an editor myself, I can appreciate good editing when I see it. The movie is driven by the bad guy, he got to argue his point of view, and decide the fate of his victims. I really have to hand it to M. Night though, his ability to set-up origin stories in the context of a superhero/villain film is quite astonishing. I wouldn't have guessed he could make a good movie after Last Airbender and After Earth, but partnering up with Blumhouse was a smart career move and let's hope he sticks with it. The moment he said "it's our game!" But the other thing? So as I watched Split and McAvoy was staring into the mirrors (his performance was spectacular!) There better be 2 hours of additional footage of Hedwig's dance scene on the DVD. I also don't get why Split is considered a good movie. Instead, we're dealing with characters shaped by dark themes of psychological trauma, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, misanthropy, etc. It is revealed that Kevin exhibits 23 alternate personalities, and in order to escape, his captives must convince one of the personalities within him to set them free, before the arrival of the 24th and final personality, the "beast". Check out the font and glass pattern. I can't imagine what audience members who have been through abuse felt like when that scene came on. McAvoy elevated all of it tenfold. It's all surprisingly dark stuff for a PG-13 film. [–]ThisManNeedsMe 393 points394 points395 points 4 years ago (14 children). But then when it was revealed that she was a victim of abuser and a cutter, it made sense as to why she had so many layers. McAvoy was amazing, and the movie was fairly intense. McAvoy pulls it off. Then the second act became Split and supposedly Glass was what the original third act was about. He didn't display 23 personalities and I'm actually glad he didn't because it would've felt gimmicky. I also assumed she dressed in lots of layers as she was a victim of abuse? Supposedly when M. It's rough that we live in a world where James McAvoy's performance won't get the recognition it deserves. I could be wrong but I got the impression that it was switched to 'dancing' to make the film a little less depressing. Instead of establishing everything the audience needs to know about the characters right at the beginning, he gradually develops them, giving them haunting backstories and spreading parts of it throughout the runtime. Add that messaging on top of the usual weaknesses of "final girl" horror, and I just can't support it. I am so glad to hear someone had the same reaction I did. Cant wait for glass. So at the end the 24th personality was pretty much like bruce Willis character in unbreakable right? Also, not really a spoiler but Shyamalan has an amazing mop of hair in this movie.
