It is energetic, even exuberant. And Keneally still has a better feeling than most for ocker oddities.
The Dickens boy (aka Plorn) is a delightfully realised 17 year old trying to apply himself to role of colonial pastural gentleman. The Australia he observes is the real story here and I delighted in the secondary characters and the stories that were only hinted at. The Dickens boy.
