The first Chelsea Bridge was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1846 and built between 1851-1858 to link the densely populated north bank of the river to the relatively green and unpolluted land south of the river and to the newly designed Battersea Park.. Chelsea Bridge is designated for the following principal reasons: * It dates from 1934-7 and was designed by London County Council Engineers under the leadership of Sir T Peirson Frank. Ellington recorded “Chelsea Bridge” for the Standard Transcription service on January 15, 1941. The suspension bridge was designed by the architect Thomas Page and officially opened by Queen Victoria on 31 March 1858. * The bridge is architecturally impressive: its slender suspension towers create an elegant profile which echoes that of Albert Bridge upstream.
