In 2009, the Getty Museum reintroduced Outerbridge to Los Angeles with a … Paul Outerbridge, Jr. (August 15, 1896 – October 17, 1958) was an American photographer prominent for his early use and experiments in color photography. The historical tension between these perceived poles was amplified in a major retrospective of Outerbridge's work at the J. Paul Getty Museum that featured more than one hundred works, from early black-and-white prints to the complex carbro- (a portmanteau of "carbon" and "bromide") process color works for which he became most famous. This catalogue was produced for the first exhibition of Outerbridge's work since 1981, held March 31 through August 9, 2009, at the J. Paul Getty Museum. It brings together one hundred photographs from all periods and styles of the photographer's career, including his Cubistic still-life images, commercial magazine photography, and nudes. "Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance" was at the Getty Center, Los Angeles (March 31--August 9), accompanied by a 164-page catalogue.
